Mining began at Mt Arthur Coal in 1968 at Bayswater No 2 lease. Mining began at Bayswater No 3 lease in 1995 and at Mt Arthur North lease in 2002. Over the last few years the focus of our mining operations has been in the Mt Arthur North lease area.

Mt Arthur Coal is an open-cut coal mine that produces thermal coal for domestic and export markets for power generation. It is one of the largest individual coal production sites in the Hunter Valley. .

Our mining equipment contains some of the largest and quietest trucks engineered in the world. Large electric shovels are used to remove overburden and excavators are used to load coal into large capacity haul trucks for transportation to the Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP).

The CHPP is located adjacent to the mine. This is where the coal is crushed, screened, cleaned and sorted according to market requirements. About two-thirds of our coal is transported by rail to the Port of Newcastle for export. A 10 kilometre overland conveyor transports the remaining coal to the Liddell and Bayswater power stations.

After the coal has been removed, rehabilitation is a priority. The overburden is replaced, shaped, covered with topsoil and replanted to resemble the original landscape.
